| Dr. Cindy Bunin-Nurik |
Dr. Cindy Bunin Nurik AKA Dr. Buttinsky. The "nosy, feel good" Therapist! She's butting in to help when it is most needed!
Blending warmth with first-hand experience on modern-day life issues, Dr. Cindy AKA Dr. Buttinsky , a marriage and family therapist, and child development specialist, has worked closely with thousands of families, couples, children and teens over the past thirty years. She was honored by being chosen for the 2004-2005 Who's Who in American Women.
The culmination and years of dedication, to the well being of families led Dr. Cindy to becoming the author of the award winning book "Fun with Mommy and Me" and is the founder of the Mommy and Me Company and Association. She developed award winning children's videos, CD's and toys. Dr. Cindy has answered thousands of questions on many parenting websites and her national magazine columns. Many of her articles can be found on the web.
Dr. Cindy's professional standing has also been spotlighted both nationally and internationally on NBC's "TODAY SHOW", "CNN", and on "Attitudes", which aired on the Lifetime channel. In addition, to co-producing videos on health and family issues, Dr. Cindy was a co-host of a local television show called "Healthbeat" and has lectured and given seminars at colleges and other public forums throughout the country.
Dr. Buttinsky is currently working on her second book, Parenting: Unplugged! The purpose of this book is to get parents to "Unplug" themselves from their phones, Blackberry's, computers, i-pods, and take time to "tune in" and really listen to their kids! In addition, parents need to encourage their children to "unplug" themselves from technology and get back to basics, such as playing outside, doing arts and crafts, engaging in physical activities, and reading. Technology is a very important part of all our lives, however, it has its place. By providing "unplugged" activities for children, families can share in spending "special time" together that children so sorely need in this fast paced society!
Dr. Cindy attended Ithaca College for her undergraduate degree, and then to The University of Miami and received her Masters Degree in Music Therapy and became a registered Music Therapist. She received her Doctorate in Early Childhood Education and Development from Nova Southeastern University, and as a licensed therapist, is a Clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
In 1987, Dr. Cindy entered into private practice where she continues her work with families and children, at Families by Design. She was the Director of the Cancer Wellness Program, an in-patient hospital based program to help cancer patients deal with the emotional aspects of the disease. This program, created by Dr. Cindy, a cancer survivor herself, was the first of its kind in the country.
Dr. Cindy believes that one of her most important qualifications is that of being a mother to her daughter Kacey. In her work, she combines her educational and therapeutic expertise, her experience in television and her love as a mother to bring special understanding and a sense of well being to all the people with whom she works.

Show Title: Founder of Americas Mom for Soldiers |
| Karla Smiley |
OUR STORY
Founder, Karla Smiley, attended the Army basic training graduation of her son, Pvt. James Reed, last year at Fort Benning, GA. Karla noticed how many young soldiers had no family supporting them at graduation. She decided these soldiers needed to know that someone cares. It became Karlas personal mission to make sure that soldiers deployed to the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan, who receive no mail from home, do not walk away from mail call with nothing, and Florida Moms for Soldiers was born. She obtained the names of 20 soldiers and began working with Chaplains, Officers and Support Groups at Ft. Bragg, NC (Home of 82nd Airborne) where James is currently stationed. She now has over 1200 soldiers to whom she sends monthly care packages, and that number grows every day.
Initially, her efforts were funded by her own second job, and the generosity of friends and family members. Karla and her family would purchase supplies and prepare boxes, then her brother-in-law, Tom Kelaher, made the trips to the post office to mail hundreds of packages. After an article commending Karlas work was published in the local newspaper, donations from citizens and civic groups became instrumental in supporting additional soldiers.
Also, as a result of that article, Karla received a phone call from Judy Smith (mother of US Army Infantry Lt. Ross Weinshenker). Judy knew of young soldiers with no family support and had considered starting her own organization, but after reading about Karla, they have joined forces and are now both working to carry out the mission.
With the growth in demand, interest and donations coming from across the country, we didnt want anyone to perceive that we only support Florida soldiers or that our efforts are limited to Florida supporters, so we changed our name to Americas Moms for Soldiers. We also needed to implement a formal organization and structure, so we are now a non-profit Florida Corporation. Our board of directors consists of Dan Smith (Chairman) who handles all of the organizational issues and oversight. Karla Smiley (Vice Chairman and Founder) still does what she does best and keeps in touch with our soldiers. Judy Smith (Treasurer) handles finances, procurement of supplies, organization and fundraising. Tom Kelaher, P.E. (Secretary) still mails all of those packages, procures supplies, and speaks to local groups. We also now have a wonderful staff of volunteers working to further the cause and ensure our soldiers receive their care packages. We are volunteers who all do whatever needs to be done and personally bear administrative costs ourselves. 100% of donations are used to purchase soldier supplies and cover the cost of postage.
The need is great and we will continue to support our soldiers until the last one comes home!

LAURA DEAN-MOONEY
MADD National President
July 2008 June 2011
Following the death of her husband Mike in a drunk driving crash, Laura joined MADD to help craft better laws to ensure the tragedy never affected another family. For the past 16 years later, Laura has worked steadfastly to change the laws in both Texas and Florida. Now as National President of the organization, she hopes to do similar work in all 50 states so that one day she can witness the total elimination of drunk driving.
On November 21, 1991, Lauras husband Mike left Oklahoma, where he had been on a business trip, and drove towards the Dallas/Ft Worth area to visit his family. Both born and bred Texans, he and Laura had just moved to Denver six months prior to start a new chapter in their life with their 8-month old daughter. The two had only been married two and half years.
At 7:15 p.m., a drunk driver going the wrong way on a Texas highway met her husband Mikes car head on, killing him instantly and simultaneously making her both a grieving widow and single mom. The offender, who died at the crash scene, had a BAC of .34 and was driving with an almost empty bottle of whiskey in the vehicle.
After the crash, she moved to College Station, Texas. Once she got her settlement from the civil suit in 1993, she called the Austin branch of MADD to donate part of that money to the organization specifically to help change laws in Texas. This started her involvement with the organization. She immediately became active with the Brazos County, Texas Chapter. Soon after, she received a position on the Texas State Board and was elected State Chairperson in 2000.
She moved to Florida in 2001 and immediately began volunteering with the Central Florida Chapter. In 2001, she came on as a Chapter Advisor to the National Board of Directors and was elected the National Board of Directors in 2002. She served as Chapter President of the Central Florida Chapter from 2003 to 2005. She served on the law enforcement advisory committee chair from 2004-2008 and served as leadership chair of the MADD Florida State Operating Council just before taking office as National President. Carrying on her passion for public policy, she served as the Public Policy Committee Chair while on the National Board of Directors.

Show Title: Disease Intervention Specialist |
| Christina Robinson |
Christina Robinson Biography
Christina Robinson is a Public Health Apprentice for the Centers for Disease Control. She has been assigned to work with the Palm Beach County Health Department STD Program as a Disease Intervention Specialist.
She is a Florida native who has been very active in her community and neighborhood since High School. Stemming back to childhood, she has always had an insuperable willingness to succeed personally while helping others in return. She has always known that she wanted to go into a field that involved making people feel better, but she never knew exactly what she wanted to do until the beginning of her junior year of college. The one thing that she knew for sure is that she had a passion for science. This was confirmed when she went on to graduate with a Chemical Science degree with a minor in biology from Florida State University.
She knew that she was not particularly interested in the medical aspect of health and human sciences by becoming a doctor, but knew that developing broader prevention measures to control diseases was something she was extremely passionate about. Luckily, she realized how public health employees are important in this process. Public health employees are often the forgotten link in a very important chain. They are the tie that binds the community with current health issues. This is why she chose to graduate with her Masters degree in Public Health from Florida State University.
Attending college was a great accomplishment. She could have chosen another road but she decided to excel and do everything in her power to remain in school. She has a true passion toward the prevention and research of infectious diseases as well as minority health issues. She hopes that her gregarious personality and indefatigable devotion toward everything she seeks to accomplish helps her become a productive worker in this ever evolving public health field.

Dr. Laurie Emery began her esteemed career in the educational system of Palm Beach County, Florida.
